Since I have some spare wooden plank pieces, I thought of constructing a little square board, about 20 square centimeters in size, with 13x13 grid on one side and 9x9 grid on the other side. They are too small (the board is 8x8), though, and the sockets are placed between the grid lines, not on the intersection points. The most fitting thing I stumbled upon design-wise are some Othello/Reversi boards, which often have this kind of "sockets" for pieces in the board that prevent the pieces from moving. Even the magnetic ones are often big and clumsy. I did some search for miniature go sets, travel go sets and alike. And then, when my children enter the room it's very difficult to move it elsewhere without moving the stones from their positions and thus ruining the state of the game/puzzle. First, I don't have much space on my desk, so each time I have to make some room for it. It's nice for your ordinary pvp play, but nowhere near compact or easily movable, which makes it hard for me to use ad-hoc. This is also true for non-interactive books and gameplay records - reading and analyzing those has so far proven difficult for me, specifically to envision the board after each move and draw logical explanations/rationalizations as to why particular move was made, especially when a whole sequence of moves is cramped on a single picture.Īlas, the goban I have at hand is a two-side full-size wooden board, about 1.5-2 cm thin, with 19x19 on one side and 13x13 on the other.

Rationale: I've noticed that it's more instructive and exciting to me to actually use a physical board to recreate a problem or a puzzle and analyze possible solutions, than it is on the computer screen. It should be compact and ideally it could be easily moved from place to place without ruining the state of the game/puzzle.

Tl dr I'm looking for ideas for making a small physical, tactile goban for learning and problem solving.
